Aurora from the Pinery

This week has been a great opportunity to see the aurora borealis (“Northern Lights”) and I finally got out to shoot them last night.  I made my way to Port Franks to meet up with my good buddy Derek Houston.  Derek is a landscape photographer in Port Franks and shoots the area pretty extensively.  After checking a few spots we decided to head down to the beaches of Pinery Provincial Park to find a vantage point that would provide us something to include in the foreground.  There wasn’t much, but did find for interesting snows formations to ground our images.

We didn’t see any light show until after 10:30pm and then it was only sporadic and faint to the eye.  There was a lot of atmosphere coming in and by 11:15pm our cameras and lens were frosting over too quickly to continue.  We did get a few shots off though, so enjoy this one below.  [Canon 5DIII, 16mm, ISO 1600, f/2.8, 20 seconds]
